Optiplex 7040 SSD

Question

I recently bought a Crucial NVMe SSD to replace the HDD in my Optiplex 7040 SFF, which has given me years of service and was running fine, except the HDD was deadly slow on boot up after installing Windows 10. Thus the purchase of an SSD. However, when I put the SSD into the NVMe slot on the motherbaord, the machine wouldn't even boot up, not BIOS screen, even, nothing. I tried it in another 7040, same thing. Crucial said I need to get an adapter so I could plug this into the SATA connector that the old HDD used, but that seemed ludicrous to me. There's an NVMe slot on the motherboard! And putting this NVMe drive in a SATA connection degrades its performance, the whole reason I bought it in the first place Why doesn't this drive work in the NVMe slot?. Crucial support had no answer for that, so I turn to the great minds of the Dell Forums for enlightenment. Is this a Dell problem, or a Crucial problem. Since you tested ssd in two Dell M.2 slot and both no post, it is probably a faulty DOA ssd, unless you can prove it works in another pc.

@redxps630 is spot on inasmuch as the SSD would not work in 2 different systems which probably indicates a bad M.2 SSD. I am curious though, the P5 is an M.2 SSD but you mentioned the MX 500. Where does that SATA drive fit into the sequence of events since you replaced an HDD not a 2.5' SSD?
