Optiplex Micro 3020-Over heat issue.

if you are handy first check whether heatsink screws are a bit loose, then remove cpu heatsink clean thermal paste and reapply new thermal paste, and reinstall heatsink making sure screws are tight (but not superman tight). see if that helps.  micro is hard to cool well by design but chassis burning hot is abnormal.

I have already do that. But nothing..

If thermal paste and heatsink are applied and installed correctly, then the overheating problem is likely due to poor air venting. test your MFF on hard desktop away from wall or enclosed space that compromises cold air inflow and hot air outflow.  do not leave it on carpet or floor. next open case cover and uninstall fan speaker assembly and check for gross dust accumulation. remember the fan blades are quite small.  if gross dust bunny is seen clean it. next use your finger to gently twirl the fan.  does it spin like a fast wind mill, i.e., one finger twirl spin the fan blades for multiple 360 degree turns? if fan spins less than 360 degree, metal or dirt has gotten in it therefore no longer working properly (thus your observation of having to crank up current).  in that case (which I suspect is happening to your fan), you need to replace the whole assembly part.  basically it is a simple thermal mechanical device.  remember that even if fan looks like okay, but still can not cool your heatsink well (unless full blast), assuming no obstruction to air flow in/out of case, prime suspect is still the fan. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SB5Bzz99TIM&list=PLaMGK8uBGSYudIJnxl4oD2CVhn9FV7bPL&index=8

This cannot be just coincidence. I have 2 separate units that are now doing this exactly. Too hot to touch. Most recent BIOS update possibly?

If none of that helps, if possible, get a bigger PC.  In this forum, micro's getting hot hasn't been anything unusual.  They can also be underpowered. 

Not sure if you need it or have fixed this still need this but I had the same problem and after updating bios to A15 it was resolved. Now it runs cool

I will definitely look into it. I  still have the unit on the sidelines.

Have the same issue for months, starting to worry. What Bios update did you do exactly? Is see Bios 2.14. I run A dell micro 3080

Hi @dkiza1,

Optiplex's 3020 and 3080 don't have the exact same BIOS.  You might want to try starting a new thread for your 3080 micro.  For now, may be put an external fan blowing on it.  Be sure not to work against the vent that has air coming out of it, but blow the fan where air goes in.

Did the suggested fixes worked on your unit? I have an Optiplex 3000 micro which also has the same problem. Updated the Bios and replaced thermal paste (though it is still new) with a high thermal conductivity paste and still have the problem.
