Recommended CPU cooling replacement
OptiPlex 7040 Micro
Hello!
I would like to upgrade my Optiplex 7040 Micro, as the stock cooler is really loud. I just want some silent option... thought about Noctua NH-L9i but I cant find any information which one to choose - that be max height etc. I dont really wanna buy anything that I wont be able to mount, or fit inside.
Does anyone here what to choose?
Thank you!

You won't be able to screw a Noctua NH-L9i in an Optiplex micro. Also, space is too tight
One idea is see if you source a copper heatsink if it doesn't have one.

The micro form factor is built similar to a laptop. It used blower style fan to force heated air out of the system. The use of Noctua cooler will recirculated heat inside the machine and will cause overheating. So, it's a poor choice even if you manage to make it fit.
A normal operation of the 7040 micro would have been quiet at idle and audible fan noise underload. It's a 2015 model and may have build-up inside which restrict airflow. Thermal paste may also lost its property and dried out. Those were the reason that kept the fan running harder to keep the system cool, hence the louder fan noise.
Replace the thermal paste and clean out the system heatsink with a can of air-duster. You will find the fan quiet down again.
