Dell PowerEdge R730 will not power on
Hello,
I have this Dell server that refuses to power on when the power button is pressed. The iDrac is disabled so there is no other means to power on.
When the server is plugged, Only fan 4 on the server proceeds to spin. The only lights that turn on and are flashing are the "J_CTRL_PNL"(See picture below). I assume this all normal and is idling since it waiting for the unit to power on.
Does anybody know what the light flashing on and off mean ?
the two lights indicated in the arrows are flashing on and off.
Fixes i have tried so far with no luck:
- Tried swapping the control panel
- stripped it down to 1 CPU and 1 memory dim in location A1
- Swapped power supplies
- re seated everything
any advice appreciated,
Thank you!

Thank you Charles for the reply.
Still no luck. I get the same reaction from the server.
Looks like it is the system board that has failed. ill salvage what I can for the next server
thank you all for the help

Jose

Hi,
The LED indicator has 2 diagnostics indications on it. 1 of it would be one of the hardware components connection or cable connection is not properly seated on the motherboard. The one other would be indicating that the motherboard is faulty where it can't receive enough power or circuit is burnt. Try minimum components configurations and try turning on the server, also check all the cable connections are properly seated.
Other than these troubleshooting, I can't think of any other that could revive the server.

Hello Jose,
I am sorry to see that. If you have it down to the minimum to post components and have removed everything else including backplane, controller, pcie cards, network daughter card… then you may be looking at a failed system board.
Your diag LED's indicate:
One of the Aux power rails has failed
These are used early in the startup process (states S1 - S5) so this is likely to be a failed plug-in component or motherboard
Try this test to rule out control panel:
In minimum to post configuration disconnect control panel from system board. Keep the lid off of the server. Hold in the iDRAC button on the rear for 15 seconds.

Hi BladeMacho,
with all previous recomended steps you should be abe to solve this failure or findout which component causes the problem.
Did you have any further question?

try to check if you can short the power button directly to the board.

@BladeMacho I just had the same problem, i found that the front panel was the culprit, i just removed the connection to it from the motherboard and it solved the problem.

To anyone who comes across this post in the future:
It's a motherboard hardware issue.
TL;DR: You may fix it by finding what exact part is failing and replace it, but replacing the whole MB is simply easier and causes less trouble.
The diagnostic LED pattern B-0-0-1-0-0-B indicates there's a problem with auxiliary power rail voltage regulators and the system is forced into a "failsafe" mode, by actively turning all aux. voltage regulators off. (please refer to the self help section of server troubleshooting guide for interpreting the diagnostic LED patterns)
Generally, after the system connects to AC power, before waiting for power on signal from power button, a series of voltage check is performed. Since the MB only receives 12V from power supply, it needs a lot of voltage regulators to generate all the different levels of voltage rails for all these chips to work. And it needs all of them to be ready before attempting to start up. This starts with 3.3V standby power, which is definitely required by the Altera MAX Ⅱ chip, then 1.5V for iDRAC controller, and so on. When any of these checks fail, or the power good signal from the regulator chip failing to reach logic high within a specific amount of time, the system protects and get trapped in failsafe mode.

Just had this issue, except none of the lights will power on as the power button isn't working. Any way I can test the backplane (because that's where the power button connects) before I order a new mobo?

Hi,
I don't think there is any way of testing the backplane. Best to try remove and reinstall the cables, which might be loose. If the mainboard is not showing any life of LED lights, this might be the mainboard issue.
