BIOS update System not Booting

I just got a used PowerEdge R710 with BIOS version 6.4.0 and confirming with my service tag I saw an update for version 6.6.0 so I created a bootable USB with freedos and copied the BIOS update exe. The installation from DOS went perfectly with no errors.

I rebooted the system and loaded F2 to change it back to UEFI. After saving changes and restarting I am stuck at this screen.

I am unable to load setup utility (F2) nor can I enter UEFI boot menu (F11).

I tried powering off, draining flea power and holding CTRL+ ESC but the BIOS recovery never loaded. I have been using a wireless keyboard though.

Can anyone help me please? I am stressed out and worried that I've just bricked my first server.

Thank you so much for replying so fast. I actually need to update this thread because I solved the issues earlier.

First I reset the BIOS to defaults using the jumper pins on the motherboard.

Second I went through the SAS Configuration Utility (CTRL+ C) and saw that there was a pre-existing RAID setup which I deleted.

After this I was able to load the BIOS setup and change the boot settings back to UEFI again.

--This time it booted into UEFI so I could choose the USB device with TrueNAS Scale on it and successfully install that to one of the HDDs.

I hope this helps people with troubleshooting in the future. Servers are so much more complex than personal computers.

Hello, at this point I recommed the following:

-----------

I think what I would want to do is get the server to the minimum to POST, power it up, and see what happens. You should be able to remove the PERC without issue, just not the riser it sits in.

Min to post for this unit is as follows:

•System board
•Risers
•Processor (CPU1) with Heatsink
•Power Supply
•One stick of memory in dual in-line memory module (DIMM) slot A1
•Control Panel with cable

Let us know how it goes and please send us https://www.dell.com/community/en/direct-messaging

Hello as for the question you sent through DM

"System services update needed" - I'm not positive that you can get rid of this. Have you tried bringing iDRAC up to date?

I have not tried updating anything except for BIOS.
