I have an integrated PERC5/i controller on a PE2950. The server crashed yesterday with nothing in the logs before the crash. After the server came back up, the following error was in the system log:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Server Administrator
Event Category: Storage Service
Event ID: 2336
Date: 1/18/2008
Time: 1:12:40 PM
User: N/A
Computer: TEKSRV7
Description:
The description for Event ID ( 2336 ) in Source ( Server Administrator ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: Controller event log: Fatal firmware error: Line 1012 in ../../raid/verdeMain.c
: Controller 0 (PERC 5/i Integrated) .
Sounds like it may be a Firmware or Driver problem. Are any of the drives offline? I would suggest updating the PERC firmware and driver from support.dell.com
Component Current Version Package 5.2.1-0067 Firmware 1.03.40-0316 BIOS MT28-8 Ctrl-R 1.04-019A MPT 00.10.61.00-IT
Drivers are the updated ones as well. The only other thing that changed just shortly after I installed the firmware is I changed the cache policy from WT to WB.
Other then that, before this past round of updates, everything has been fine.
Joe, have you updated your server, have you received any similar problems?
I used the latest firmware, which came out in November....and that's the firmware/driver I had issues with.
I talked with a dell support rep on Friday. I've downgraded to the previous firmware/driver combo to see if I still have issues or not. Unfortunately, the problem is random, and it took about a week between the two crashes. So I won't know whether the older driver/firmware combo helps, or if I have a hardware issue.
