IDrac8 keeps rebooting

Hello. can you help me ?

on a PowerEdge R530, IDrac keeps rebooting randomly 10-20 times a day.

The server blows 30 sec then it stops blowing. IDrac is not responding during this time

The system stays up and functionnal during this time. Only Idrac is rebooting

Last Idrac firmware update (2.81.81.81 and 2.82.82.82) and Bios (2.13.0) update don't solve the issue

Try to reset Idrac in bios with default settings... it works but don't solve the issue

thanks for yout help

Hi, the button is just what's on the surface, if that's the case you might have to change what's underneath as well. Please see the attached.

Hi @Benjamin.Declume,

Is iDRAC accessible?

This issue happens after updating the iDRAC firmware or the issue happened and the iDRAC was updated to check if it resolves the issue?

Could you check and confirm, in Lifecycle controller's inventory list, iDRAC is at the updated firmware level?

Have you tried power drain method on the server? https://dell.to/3nJBHIt

Hi @DELL-Joey C

thanks for your answer...

Is iDRAC accessible?: No when rebooting, Yes after reboot finished

This issue happens after updating the iDRAC firmware or the issue happened and the iDRAC was updated to check if it resolves the issue? : Before updating... I tried to update and reset to default settings to resolve the issue... still the same

Could you check and confirm, in Lifecycle controller's inventory list, iDRAC is at the updated firmware level? Yes it's at the last version 2.82.82.82

Have you tried power drain method on the server? https://dell.to/3nJBHIt

I've tried this before update firmware.. Gonna try a second time asap get back to you

Thanks

Is the blue i button on the front panel stuck? Normally if you hold it in for ~20 seconds it will reboot the idrac (not the system). From your log, it logs like the i button may be stuck or malfunctioning.

Hi @Benjamin.Declume,

I would agree with nadogmoney, it could be the i button. It's unlikely but try check if the button still works? Is the i button LED in blue? Blinking or steady lid?

Do you have iDRAC 8 Ent? Try removing the iDRAC port card to test the issue?

What is the rollback firmware version on iDRAC?

Last, if all else fails, probably try to reset the iDRAC using the RACADM. https://dell.to/3Ak6U9Z

Benjamin.Declume,

I don't believe that you can disable the button, but what I would also include for you to try is to reseat the cable connections for the control panel the "i" button is on.

thanks for your help. I really appreciate that...

Is the i button LED in blue? Blinking or steady lid? No and No until I press it

Normally if you hold it in for ~20 seconds it will reboot the idrac: Yes it works but before rebooting Idrac it shows "Unrecognized post code"... then panel stays blue with nothing on it... then turns off and idrac reboot (server blows as usually)

you're right it show this in Lifecycle logs after rebooting: The iDRAC firmware was rebooted with the following reason: ID Button.

Do you have iDRAC 8 Ent? Try removing the iDRAC port card to test the issue?: No licence field show "Basic Management"

What is the rollback firmware version on iDRAC? : I was in 2.70.70.70 since a long time... No problem then suddenly without reasons, the issue appeared

So I upgrade to 2.81.81.81 and  after to 2.82.82.82

Gonna try this powerd drain solution https://dell.to/3nJBHIt

and this after reset the iDRAC using the RACADM. https://dell.to/3Ak6U9Z

If it's the i button, is there a way to disable it ?

Thanks

This below don't solve the problem

reset the iDRAC using the RACADM. https://dell.to/3Ak6U9Z

test racadm racreset and racadm racresetcfg

I think the blue i button on the front panel is stuck or malfunctioning.

Hello,

Was the server working and now it does not?

If so; Do you know of anything that was done on the system around the time it started having this issue?

Do you have some images you can post of the error you are seeing?

Initially I can recommend try these steps in order listed: Drain flea power, Clear NVRAM, Minimum to Post configuration.

*drain flea power (shut down, disconnect power cables and Network cables, hold in power button 20 seconds with cords removed). After flea power drain, system has to set for 3 minutes for DRAC to reset without any power plugged in, then plug in NIC and power but wait 2 minutes before power on to give DRAC time to initialize.

Check results

*Clear NVRAM - there is a map under the lid to show the jumper location. Shut down, Set jumper to the Clear position, power on and Post up to the jumper error, shut down and return jumper to original location.

Check results

*Minimum to post (this is minimum components to POST, it won't boot, this is to test POST. If successful POST, put things back a little at a time until find faulting component)

The minimum components to allow the PowerEdge R430 to complete POST are:

System Board

* CPU1 with heat sink (minimum for troubleshooting)

* Single DIMM configuration with DIMM in socket A1

* Control panel with cable (to the power system on)

* Power supply unit (and PDB/PIB)

Remove anything not on that list: DVD, Hard drives, PERC controller, backplane, network card, NIC cable, any pcie cards, keyboard, mouse, USB devices, …. anything not on the list remove.

Leave the fans installed.

If it does not post then the issue is with one of those components.

If you get successful POST, put things back a little at a time until you find the faulting component.

Dear all, just for reference if anyone running into it in the future.

I have a Dell T330, symptom as described above, the iDrac keep rebooting every couple of minutes.

Minimized the connected things on MB, I have found the problem to be the front LCD and buttons.

Take that cable out, iDrac stay on, allowed me to updated everything. Putting the cable back, the LCD just light up without any characters and iDrac rebooting every minutes.

Upon close inspection, the cable has been bad (lost 2 contacts), replaced with fairly similar cable from Dell R730XD I got laying around, this result in good working order LCD, display TAG and info, power button light up althought do not work when pressed, iDrac still rebooting for no reason.

This lead me to believed the front panel buttons are faulty, will have to examinate futher.

Worse case, I just take the cable out and control the thing throught iDrac, got an Enterprise license for it so should be ok.
