M640 for VRTX iDRAC Threshold temperature

Hi,

We have 4 x M640 blades for VRTX. The blades are reaching the Warning Threshold temperature easily, and we have noticed that the iDRAC threshold temperature range does not match with the one shown in the VRTX. The default iDRAC threshold is 3 to 28C (Warning) and -7 to 32C (Critical), whereas the VRTX is 3 to 42C (Warning) and -7 to 47C (Critical). I am looking for some advise:

- Should we leave the default iDRAC threshold temperature values or change them to match the ones in the VRTX?

- Will changing the iDRAC threshold temperature values to match the VRTX ones have a negative impact?

- If we change the iDRAC threshold temperature, do we need to restart the iDRAC, blade or CMC?

Cesarbsl,

I wouldn't recommend starting with adjusting the thresholds just yet, I would focus first on why they are regularly hitting that threshold.

What I would suggest is that you start with updating the server on BIOS, iDrac, etc. Then after updating access the iDrac - Configuration - System Settings - HW Settings - Cooling Configuration and then see if adjusting the Fan Speed Offset to a higher fan speed resolves the cooling issue, as seen on page 63 here

Let me know if this helps.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your reply. The iDRAC threshold is too low (28C) and the room temperature is around 27 - 29C. We have other VRTX with M640 (slightly different model) in the same room, but the iDRAC default threshold in all of them is 32C (instead of 28C) so they are fine. That is why I was thinking of increasing the threshold temperature, although I was unsure as it is a default value and maybe there is a reason for that.

Since the room temperature is 27-29C and the iDRAC threshold is 28C, is the cooling fan not doing what it is supposed to do?

Hello @cesarbsl,

The standard operating temperature for a continuous operation is from 10°C to 35°C. The room temperature arround 27-29C is ok.

Did you already check the firmware versions and update them if necessary?

Regards.

Hi Diego,

Thanks for your reply. I did and the firmware is the correct one. But, the iDRAC default threshold is still 28C, not 42C.

Hello @cesarbsl,

Please, let me know the current BIOS and IDRAC firmware. I want to look for issues on the specific version you have right now. By the way, did you try adjusting the Fan Speed Offset to a higher fan speed?

Regards.
