PowerEdge 2900 E2022 POST FAIL Question
PROBLEM: My company has a number of older PowerEdge 2900 servers still in use that they let lapse out of warranty years ago. I came in this morning and the front display of one of them is showing "E2022 POST FAIL" and on screen it shows "PCIe Training Error: Embedded NIC 2 - SYSTEM HALTED." Apparently we had a power outage a couple days ago that lasted longer than the big UPS in the server room could handle and all the servers went down. I looked through a number of the support Forums and this error most likely means the motherboard has failed. As the server is out of warranty, I have been directed to handle this myself. As I am not a trained IT technician (just the only guy left with any IT knowledge), I am unsure where to go next. QUESTION: We have a spare unused PowerEdge 2900 (exact duplicate of the failed unit) and I am wondering if I can just pulled the hard drives out of the failed server, put them in the spare server, move the cabling over and bring it up? Will this work? Will the hardware change cause problems with Active Directory or any other OS-related issues? Any help you guys can provide would be most appreciated. Thanks. Jim

You may be able to migrate the drives to another controller. It depends on the current controller and the controller you are migrating. You can find out what drive migration options are available in the controller manual.

The biggest concern with moving the drives to another system is encryption. If you have any encryption enabled then you may encounter issues if you change hardware. If you have disk encryption or any other encryption then you will need to research hardware replacement procedures for that encryption.
If the embedded network controller has failed then yes, replacing the system board would be the logical solution. You can try going through no POST troubleshooting to try to resolve the issue and make sure another failed hardware device is not causing the error. It is possible that another hardware component, like a USB storage device, is causing issues. The error is not always indicative of the source of the problem, it can sometimes just be reporting a symptom. I suggest troubleshooting and not just replacing parts based on the error.
