Go to SolutionProcessor upgrade PowerEdge SC430
Hi all,
We use an old but reliable PowerEdge SC430 with a Intel Xeon Pentium 4 (socket 775) that i now want to boost a bit with a Xeon X3220 (2.4 GHz, FSB 1066, socket LGA775, L2 cache 2 MB). When i put this new processor in, the server won't boot. The powerbutton turns to orange when pressed but nothing else happens. Who can tell me what's wrong?

Never mind, seems that the SC 430 has a socket 604 when i take a look at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Xeon_microprocessors and look for Xeon 2.8...
Per the online specs for the SC430, <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell> it's indeed limited to Pentium D, Pentium 4 or Celeron D.
This does mean that you can upgrade to a Pentium D if you can find one (try Ebay).

what about upgrading to the e5700? It has a bus speed of 800mhz like the sc430. Am i limited to cpu's that are 90nm or does that not matter? Because the pentium D 800 series is 90nm but the 900 series is 65nm. What else needs to be considered when looking for a cpu upgrade? Thanks for your help!

Other CPU's seem so expensive, that it would be cheaper to buy a new system:
If you know a cheaper place to check these processors in or if you know where to find faster socket 604 processors, please let me know!

I was actually asking if the e5700 would work in the sc430. I am not suggesting you try it. I have the same machine as you and would like to upgrade mine as well. I dont think my sc430 has a 604 socket. According to CPU-Z my sc430 shows to have a socket 775. The processor in my sc430 shows to be a socket 775 also. It is a Prescott 521. According to the previous post a Pentium D cpu is an available upgrade. I have a Dell XPS w/Pentium D 820 in my office and it also shows to be a socket 775 with CPU-Z. Could CPU-Z be wrong? But when I have looked at the specs for the Prescott 521 and Pentium D 820 they seem to be a socket 775 so I dont think they could all be wrong.
Jea, ik thought so too and bought a X3220 socket 775. It's about the same socket, but it didn't work :-( Fortunately i could buy a T110 with socket 775, my Dell account manager & co told me. Ofcourse the T110 came with a different socket. I ended up with a new system with a new processor and a lot of adminstration hassle to get it right.
Summary: the SC430 came with both socket 604 and 775, probably a generation change or so.

The E5700 will not work.
Just because a CPU is 775 does not mean it will work.
I've just upgraded my SC430 and the entire process was quite uneventful - I expected some kind of problem, but had none whatsoever.
Originally came with the 521 Pentium 4 @ 2.8 GHz.
I bought a 945 Pentium D @ 3.4GHz on eBay for $32
I first upgraded the BIOS to A04.
Switched the chips and rebooted.
