R710 Memory Upgrade

Question

I'm going to be upgrading memory on one of my servers. I need to update the bios (may be high enough but since I'm doing it all figured I may do that too since it's been nearly a decade). Anyways, currently it has 8 4gb simms for 32gb of ram in the advanced mode. I'm going to get 12 16gb simms.  Is it better to:   A.  Leave in advanced mode and simply swap out for the new simms so  192gb total, 96 gb per cpu B.  Put in optimized mode and then I've got 4 8gb simms (not in use currently), that I put in?  So then total of 224gb or ram?  Obviously 224 is more but unsure optimized vs advanced and if it's worth the work (running windows and sql server and has been running with 32gb).  Seems maybe a7/a8 and b7/b8 would be the 8 gb simms? Or something else?

Can you share details of16GB memory you have? Is it from Dell? If yes can you share the part number. You also need to consider memory ranks also while upgrading memory. You can refer "System Memory" section on page 129 of below link for more details on this

Well haven't got it yet but was looking at some Dell refurb memory.   Don't have the part number but it's DDR3-1333 MHz PC3-10600R ECC memory if that helps.

You can go as high as 384GB for R710 and R610 by using 12 x 32GB DIMMs, but for 2DPC (2 Dimms per channel), memory bandwidth will drop to 1066Mhz

Dell does not have those, I'm afraid.

The memory you poste : DDR3 16GB 2Rx4 PC3L-10600R RDIMM ECC Server Memory RAM, "may work".

We cannot guarantee it as it is not a Dell validated DIMM.

Previously listed in the thread were DIMMs we have validated.

Be sure to follow the memory guidelines for the R710
