R720 Memory questions
Hello,
I just purchased an R720 Server for home lab and need some info..
I have never had server before so very new to this..
For Server DDR3 16GB ECC RDIMM quad rank memory I read the sample memory configs in the manual.. But I am still confused by it.
If I install 1 Quad Rank 16gb per channel can i then populate all the other slots for both cpus with 16gb 2Rx4 ram?
Or does the quak rank ram still force me to leave green slots empty?
I know if I did 2 quak rank per channel then Green would need to be empty.
But I did not see example for using just 1 quad rank per channel and then populating all the rest of the slots with 2Rx4.
Also are there any important updates for BIOS, Firmware, Drivers or other I need to install?
Thanks
Gren

Hello,
Thanks for the fast reply and help.
I did not read anything before buying the R720 So I purchased 24 sticks of the quad rank RDIMM's I purchased well before memory prices went crazy.
I was reading anything I could find about the R720 on any site I could find.
I was told if I upgraded my cpu's to E5-2697V2 that the quak rank would likely work if I filled all the ram slots except green...
I have not installed cpu or ram yet as I was waiting for new caddies and blanks..
But I hope to try ;ater next week as everyhthing should arrive by then..
Thans again for your help and info..

The R720 can be finnicky with quad-rank RAM, personally i'd only install one DIMM per channel for best performance and stability.
You can test your mixed configuration and it may work, but will likely run at reduced speed if it does.
If you want the higher capacity, i would suggest filling all your memory slots with dual-rank modules and foregoing the quad-rank ones.
