RAID-5 (Bad Lock)

Hi, i have an issue with my server storage RAID-5 which one of the drive (2TB) turns faulty. I already replaced with the new and the rebuilding is success.

Looks like the drive doesnt appear and i check in the Dell Open Manage ive see in the Virtual Disk the Raid 5 do have Bad Locks. How do i resolve this ?

Firmware of my server is :-
Firmware

Virtual Disk Display

I have the PERC Log which I attached below

PERC Log as 22102024

How do we recover those RAID 5 files? Hope can advise me ahead of this matter

Thanks

MEF IT Support,

The process you would use for bad blocks on the Virtual Disk would be as follows;

1 Run consistency check

Consistency check: Expand Storage>expand controller. Select ‘Virtual Disk’. Choose ‘Check Consistency’ from dropdown and Execute.

2   Perform a backup of the virtual disk with the Verify option selected.  Do a full backup with system state, with Verify.

*  Backup operation fails on one or more files. In this case, restore the file from a previous backup. After restoring the file, proceed to step 3.

*  Backup operation completes without error. This indicates that there are no bad blocks on the written portion of your virtual disk.  If you still receive bad block warnings, the bad blocks are in a non-data area.

Proceed to Step 3.

3   Run Patrol Read and check the system event log to ensure that no new bad blocks are found.

To run Patrol Read: Select H730 in left column under Storage. Click Information&Configuration hyper link at top of page. Go to Controller Task drop down. Select ‘Start Patrol Read’ and Execute.

If bad blocks still exist, proceed to step 4. If not, the condition is cleared without the need for step 4.

4   To clear these bad blocks, execute the Clear Virtual Disk Bad Blocks task.

To clear the virtual disk bad blocks: Select the ‘Virtual Disk’ link under the H730. In the drop down choose ‘Clear Virtual Disk Bad Block’ and Execute.

5 Once the above steps are complete, set the Patrol Read to Auto:

Select H730 in left column under Storage. Click Information&Configuration hyper link at top of page. Go to Controller Task drop down. Select ‘Set Patrol Read Mode’, Execute.  Choose Auto and Apply Changes.

Let me know if this helps.

Refer to picture above, before we fix the bad block, do we need to replace the last hdd that show warning sign (failure predicted)?

Hi,

I had to make sure that the predictive failure drive is in the array/VD that is having bad block. Went through the logs that you provided, and found these. We don't usually do log analysis thoroughly, but I found these while looking for the drive properties.

1. PD13 is having predictive failure and might be the cause of the bad block. Hence, you can run the consistency check first then replace drive 13.

2. PD1 and PD3 has some sense key error/media error. PD1 has more and PD3 has only 2 trace. PD1 will fail soon, as soon as it fails the smart error. So far, there isn't any alert stating need replacement, but there will be issues with bad block too. Hence, you should also run consistency check and if you want, replace PD1. It's not urgent, but have 1 drive on hand for replacement in case.

For both issues, you will need to do data backup, full.

If you are seeing a Predicted Failure drive then you will need to look at replacing it, as the bad blocks have exceeded the threshold amount. Now if you are going to replace the Predicted Failure drive, and it is still in an Online state, then you will need to Force that drive Offline before replacing it. The reason being is that the bad blocks can transfer to the replacement drive and can trigger a Predicted Failure state on it, or it could puncture the Virtual Disk. Now if the Predicted Failure drive is already offline, or the server is off, then you can simply just replace it.

Wanted to let you know that.

@DELL-Chris H Sorry Chris, we could not find in Dell Open Manager "perform a backup of the virtual disk with the Verify option selected" (No.2). Please advice us.

Thanks,

Hakim

Sorry, that would be if you were using Windows Backup.

@DELL-Chris H Currently we have 1 partition that we cannot access (You can refer to below link/attachment) . What happen if we skip the step No.2 that you mentioning above and we go directly to step No.3 and No.4? Is that possible?

Hi,

i could not open the link.

if you ignore step 2, you must calculate that you lose your data.

OpenManage is a downloadable Software.
