Simple File Server Needed
I currently have a PowerVault 715N (w/gig NIC) on my home network that I'm looking to upgrade. Here-in lies the question: All I want to do is store files, it seems a lot easier and a lot cheaper to buy a server with lots of drive expandability room instead of the more expensive NAS devices.
Am I missing something here? I understand the main reason for NAS is rack density, but that isn't an issue for me.
At most there are going to be 3 users. Since a NAS is designed for file storage is it faster at it then a dedicated file server? All I have is a simple gig network.

A Nas system was designed to be cheaper than a dedicated file server.
Most are headless, no keyboard, monitor, cd etc = cheaper.
Most use either a cutdown or proprietry OS = cheaper than a full licence.
There are now plenty of small network file servers that you can hook up drives to and do simple sharing.
Or you can brew your own, google 'homemade nas'
