T310 Memory Upgrade Question

I want to be absolutely clear about what is possible before I get started.  The server isa  Xeon 3400 series and has 2gb x2 UDIMMs currently installed.  I've learned that I can't mix RDIMMs and UDIMM.  I have 1 piece of the correct RDIMM in 8GB.  Can I put that in alone or does it  have to be paired?  And if it has to be paired does it have to be paired with another 8GB or just another RDIMM?

Thanks all!

You can use a single dimm (in slot 1). However, when you go for 2 dimms, they need to be in slot 1 and 2 and have to be identical in specs.

The document only lists support for a single dimm in the sizes of 1GB or 2GB, but I can't imagine that a single 8GB RDIMM would be any different.

Only one memory module is needed.

I've read that document several times and it is not clear to that I can use just one or or that I can mix.

So to be clear, I can't install an 8GB & 4GB together?

Thanks for the input.  That seemed like it made sense to me too, if you can use 1 piece of 2gb why wouldn't you be able to use 1 of 8gb.  But docs didn't show any scenario like that; I wanted to hear it from someone else.  If anyone else has an opinion I'd love to hear it.  I'm going to execute tomorrow.

Reading above again this is what I get - the next piece in slot 3 must a be 8GB RDIMM but in the other slots I could put a pair of any size RDIMMs.  Correct?

The one piece of 8GB in slot 1 worked. So all pieces UDIMM or RDIMM have to be the same size?  At this point I can only add 8GB pieces, correct?
