Adding additional hard disk drives to Dell R740XL

Hi,

I need to add additional hard disk drives to my dell R740 XL server to increase the storage space

the server is RAID10 , is running ESXI and hosts multiple production virtual machines.

Is there a procedure to perform this and can it be done online without affecting the running virtual machines.?

Are you have PowerEdge R740XD? If you have supported RAID controller you can use Online Capacity Expansion (OCE) feature to increase virtual disk space by adding disks. You can refer below link for details on this

https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-in/000129246/dell-poweredge-how-to-change-the-raid-level-of-a-virtual-disk

Please note It is recommend to perform a backup before doing any RAID Reconfiguration. Also note OCE operation will take time based on virtual disk size and disk performance will be impacted while OCE operation is in progress

Hi as per the OCE procedure from idrac9 i cannot see the RLM option in  the dropdown list on the virtual disk configuration tab.

Is the new disks to expand the virtual disk are inserted? Can you share physical disk page screenshot?

No, the new disks to expand are not inserted yet. will that option in dropdown appear only after inserting the new disk?

Yes. That option will come if there are drives available for reconfiguration. You need to ensure new drives are from same type and family of current drives. Size can be same or more that current dirves.
