Adding Hard Disk to PowerEdge R440 Server Equipment

We are currently looking to add at least 1TB or more of additional storage to our PowerEdge R440 server equipment, as we are experiencing a shortage of storage space.

However, we have never performed this type of task before and do not know where to start.

What are the initial considerations and checks that need to be made when adding a storage hard disk to server equipment?

Additionally, is there a recommended hard disk model for the PowerEdge R440?

We apologize for any clumsiness in our writing, as this is our first attempt at such a task.

Hello, and welcome to the community.

  1. Check the available drive bays on your server.

  2. Check the RAID configuration of your server. If you have an existing RAID configuration, you will need to add the new hard disk to the existing RAID group. If you do not have an existing RAID configuration, you can create a new RAID group with the new hard disk.

  3. Check the available drive bays on your server.
  4. Check the compatibility of the hard disk with your server.
The Dell EMC PowerEdge R440 system supports: https://dell.to/3Nxy06s
  • 4x3.5 configuration: up to 4 SAS or SATA drives (SDD/HDD) / Nearline SAS HDDs
  • 8x2.5 configuration: up to 8 SAS or SATA drives (SDD/HDD)
  • 10x2.5 configuration: up to 10 SAS or SATA drives (SDD/HDD)
  • 10x2.5 with NVMe configuration: up to 4 NVMe SSDs + SAS or SATA drives (SDD/HDD) on remaining slots
