Addtional RAID array using non standard Dell disks

Hi All,

Currently using a Poweredge T640 with 4 x 1.9 Dell SATA drives in a RAID 5 configuration.

I understand that non Dell branded disks can be used alongside and thinking of using Kingston DCM 600 alongside in another 4 x 1.9TB RAID 5 array.

Is this possible with the PERC H730P to do this and what are the likely issues I will run into? I understand the limitations regarding drive health alerts, and firmware possibilities. Thanks

In my >15 years with Dell PowerEdge and "Customers"

  1. Disk is not recognized at all
  2. Disk is regcognized but gives amber status
  3. Disk will get a green light...but trouble during runtime. One of the reason is when dealing with devices for "desktop" usage which goes into sleep mode after time time. Your PERC will not expect this and freaks out
  4. All green and no trouble.

When ever possible choose a vendor/modell which is also used by Dell. So chances are way higher that it will works.

What always than is a problem... Firmware update of such non Dell devices and devices behind a PERC RAID.

So... if youre running a bussines... its a no go and not worth the trouble. If its for home use... just do it.

Regards,

Joerg
