Alerts for RAID problems
Hi, we are about to buy a Poweredge server and are looking at a few models (SC430, SC1420, 800 and 830).
Ideally we want to go for a RAID 5 solution in order to maximise storage space whilst still having some protection against a drive failure.
I have seen so many conflicting reports about speed differences between RAID 5 and RAID 1. Would a two-disk RAID 1 be faster than a three disk RAID 5?
The main question I have is, when something goes wrong and a drive fails in either RAID 1 or RAID 5, how would these systems notify you? I'm looking at getting the system without an OS and then installing a customised Linux onto it. I will not be on the physical site of the server much of the time and so it would be good if notification of the RAID problem could be either so noticeable that people who are around would notice it and let me know, or in a perfect world if it could send me an e-mail :) If you use the CERC for hardware RAID 5, does this hide the array from the OS, so you don't need to install any drivers?
Sorry I have so many questions, this is my first time setting up a proper server.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi Oli,
For Linux there is a version of array manager that will work, and it can work with the other opemnanage tools to communicate alearts thru SNMP. The management station can be set up for sending email alerts. Dell charges money for telling you how to do this, perhaps one of the community can help you out.
