Cannot use 750GB unallocated disk

Hi Guys,

We have challenges with those 2 R620 servers with the ff. details:

4 Drives x 931Gb =3.724TB Raw Capacity

1. During RAID 5 as we show you:

*2793 GB will be our usable drive.

*From it, we will be using 250Gb as our OS Drive.

*1.8TB will be our other volume which was automatically set on that capacity and 750Gb unallocated which we cannot use.

We have learned that MBR disk type is only 2TB maximum and the rest will not be usable. We tried to convert it to GPT as it's maximum is 9.4ZB but it was not successful since it is one disk, where the OS disk is located.

How can we use the 750GB unallocated disk? How you can help us. Thank you!

Regards,

JAD

It appears you may have installed the OS in bios mode, rather than UEFI, which the server and the OS both support. Here is a link from Microsoft's TechNet: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/6473f30f-af22-4ce1-bc2d-e58cc35d351b/unable-to-partion-on-unallocated-space?forum=winserverhyperv

There are no tools to convert it from MBR to GPT; you will have to reinstall.

Just to clarify ... in order to have a partition larger than 2TB, the DISK must be GPT (not MBR); Windows cannot BOOT to a GPT partition unless it is INSTALLED on a UEFI-enabled system.  You have two options:

1. Get another disk (or two) - smaller than 2TB, to which you would install the OS.

2. Break up the disk space into multiple arrays - one array small enough for the OS, and the second array to use the rest of the space.  Each array is seen as a separate "disk" by the OS, so the first one can be MBR, and the second one can be GPT.

3. Install in UEFI mode, having a disk larger than 2TB, onto which you can install Windows and partition how you like.

As Geoff said, you WILL have to reinstall ... there is no other way to fix your situation at this point.
