configure my 1st server
Hi, Guys..
i want to buy my 1st server : Dell(TM) PowerEdge(TM) T310 Server Tower, with :
2 x 500GB 3.5" 7.2K RPM SATA Hard Drive - Hotplug
PERC H200 Adapter RAID Controller
Then, i want to running Windows Server 2008 R2 as the Operating System.
my Questions are :
1. how to configure the hard disk, so the 2 hdd can be mirror each other? I have no idea about RAID. If i have to use the RAID, kindly give me step by step to configure that.
2. How about CAL license?Should I setting the through the windows? or is it needed only by legal??
Any help is appreciated.

Vinc_Eko,
You can follow this link and then go to page 44 for the information on configuring the array (volume). For the mirror you will need to select Raid 1 (R1). - support.dell.com/.../H200.pdf
With the CALS, you have 5 automatically with the media. So there is nothing that needs to be done.
2008 doesn't have license enforcement features, it is based on the honor system.

Hi Christ,
That's a perfect answer. I have a describe about RAID now.Two thumbs up for your answer.I'll let you know about the result, once when the server comes.
Btw, about CAL. If i want to use about 100 CAL, i have do nothing about the setting in Windows, right? I meant, i only have to buy the license without any action in the system?

No problem Vinc_eko, I sure Chris has not been held in such reverence all that often.
To save Chris some time, all you needed to do is buy the license and not exceed the number of users using the server, to stay license complient.
Little advice to the subject.. since it your first server, keep it simple (KISS), it not as easy as it sounds. Do not play with any settings or features you do not fully understand, document all setting changes so you can reverse them. Hesitate when installing all software, if it is not needed, don't install it, no demo on a server . Avoid cruising the Internet on the server, this is the easiest way to get malware or viruses; a good resident anti virus is a must have. Try to create avenues of escape should you make a mistake, as in a current backup or an image, or backup of configuration files. Mantra KEEP IT SIMPLE.

well, also thanx for you too for your suggestion.
About make an image, yes...that's my priority.FYI, i am using "Easeus to do backup" to create my image.
in short, i'm very glad to join in this forum. There are a lot of people, smart people, joined this forum and give his answer & opinion voluntarily.
One more thing : i also like with your magic word : KISS (Keep is Simple)...:-bd.

KISS, not my abbreviation, short for Keep It Simple. Used Easeus, good product. Before you create an image, run chkdsk or your imaging may not work.
With raid 1, if you pull one of the drives and replace it with another drive, the drive you pulled becomes an image, I do this at some clients. Only issue with this is you do not want to do it often, as the drive connectors and backplane are not rated for an extended number of pull/incertions cycles, a few times a year is OK.
