Dell C6220 Backplane

Question

Hi, I have a Dell C6220 (24x2.5') which has a Direct Backplane. Can I switch this to a configurable Backplane so I can take advantage of the Zoning HDD Application?   If so, what would I need to make this upgrade?   Thanks

Are you in original configuration as originally purchased?

I'm sorry as I said there is not kit for changing backplane so no documentation on jumpers would need changed for a field upgrade of backplane. These would be set from the factory.

Which backplane do you have?

3.5" Direct Backplane

The 3.5" Direct backplane allows direct connection of 12 SAS/SATA ports to 12 3.5" SAS/SATA drives. As this is a passive

backplane, it does not support the flexible assignment of HDDs to nodes; Each node in the chassis will get an equal split of

the total available HDDs. The 3.5" Direct backplane is available in both 2-node and 4-node configurations.

The backplane contains an Micro Controller Unit (MCU) to decode both Serial General Purpose Input/Output (SGPIO) and I2C based HDD LED signals

2.5" Direct Backplane

The 2.5" Direct backplane allows direct connection of 24 SAS/SATA ports to 24 2.5" SAS/SATA drives. As this is a passive backplane, it does not support the flexible assignment of HDDs to nodes; each node in the chassis will get an equal split of the total available HDDs. The 2.5" Direct backplane is available in both 2-node and 4-node configurations. Note that in 2-node configurations, this backplane is limited to 16 total drives (8 per node). The backplane contains an MCU to decode both SGPIO and I2C based HDD LED signals

Looks it is supported.

Look at the c6220 owners manual on page 271. The SAS Expander can be installed. Is that correct ?

There are jumper settings on the backplane as well. I recently changed from 1U sled to 2U sled. Does these jumpers need to change to reflect that ?

Hello MightyJainesh,

What I think Martin was trying to get to is that field change to backplane configuration is not supported. It is selected at time of purchase. We do not have kits for upgrade so to attempt to do it we would have to piece part components together.

These are what would be needed, as far as I can find, but it is still missing at least one cable that I cannot locate in the parts database.

Understood. Is there any jumper settings I need to do or it will all work together automatically?

Basically, I have 2 x 2U Sled, and I am currently only able to see 8 Drives, not 12 Drives per node. Am I missing something?

That makes sense now. Since it is Passive, it only allows 8 Drives to be mapped to each node since they are are 2U Nodes.

To be able to use 12 Drives, I have to get SAS Expender or change the chassis with it.
