Does physical drive clear operation wipes the disk?

We are planning to retire a few drives on our Dell R620/R630 servers. We are wondering does “clear” operation in H710Mini physical disk section will wipe the data on the HDDs? It takes a long time for the operation to complete, roughly an hour for 600GB 15kRPM HDD, so we just assume that it wipes.

we have been Googling this question for days, but all we found was how to do it, Dell does really explain the purpose of it. Would be great if someone can confirm if this operation wipes the drives.

Hello OutOfMemoryError,

A slow initialization would wipe out the data.

I would recommend making dissimilar array to initialize.

Example: If you had a RAID1 then create two RAID0 virtual disk to slow initialize.

Hi,

this cleared only the config and did not completely wipe the data, so a restore could be still possible.

Do you have any more questions for me?

Hmmm is there a way to wipe the disk without an OS then? Do a create virtual disks and do “slow initialization” ?
