Going from no RAID to RAID 1
Hi
I have been given the task of adding some redundancy to a server that currently only has one hard drive and no PERC. The drive is also reporting a predictive faiure - nice :smileysad:
I have two replacement drives and a RAID enabling kit. What is the quickest way to get the exisitng data off of the failing drive and onto a nice new RAID1 array? Can I have all three disks in at the same time, create a virtual disk with the two new ones, and just copy the data across - how can I tell the server that the new virtual drive will soon be the system drive?

The safest option is to:
Backup the data
Remove drive reporting predictive failure
Install RAID key and 2 new drives
Create RAID 1
Restore from tape

Hi,
The RAID controller should be able to import a foriegn drive, and mark it as a RAID 0, the problem comes at boot time, you're going to have driver problems, may need to go into recovery mode on boot and change the driver.
When installing the RAID key and enabling it in the system BIOS, do not have ANY drives installed at that time. Power off and reinstall the drive and follow the instructions in the user's manual on importing the foriegn disk.
