H730 mini array card SSD RAID 1 array damage.

Server Model: PowerEdge R730 (Old)

Array Card Model: H730 mini

SSD Model: Kingston KC600 x2 (Brand new)

Issue Description: With the above configuration, after setting up the SSDs as RAID 1, the system was initially installed successfully. The system could boot into the operating system without any issues after the initial installation. However, every time the "Restart" button was clicked within the system (soft reboot) or the "reboot" command was used in Linux, the array would fail and fail to boot.

Error message screenshot: Additionally, the disks cannot be re-imported.

At this point, the error in the iRDAC log is as follows:

Fault detected on drive 0 in disk drive bay 1.
Fault detected on drive 1 in disk drive bay 1.

Attempts made:

  1. BIOS update to the current version 2.17.0
  2. iRDAC update to the current version 2.84.84.84
  3. BIOS reset
  4. Replacement of the SAS backplane
  5. Replacement of another H730 mini array card

After completing these five actions, the problem persists. To determine if the issue lies with the SSD, a single SSD was removed and connected to a computer using a SATA to USB cable. Various disk testing tools such as partition detection and HDDTune were used, and no issues were found. The S.M.A.R.T. data also indicated normal performance.

After reinstalling the SSD into the machine and powering it on, the array unexpectedly reappeared. Through some accidental experimentation, a peculiar pattern was discovered:

Whenever the system is restarted using the soft reboot method, the array goes missing.

However, if the system is shut down directly or power is cut off before powering it on again, the array functions normally.

Has anyone encountered this issue before? I am seeking a solution.

Hello benjamin2023,

I do not see where Dell validated the Kingston SKC6002 for the R730.

If you can post a picture of the drive label showing a Dell part number I can look into this for you.

Any forum member that has tried the Kingston SKC6002 in the R730 is welcome to share their experience.

I would offer to check here for compatible SSD drives :

Sales may have more available if you contact them directly.
