HDD not detected

Question

Hi,

I'm a new user of DELL Servers and I've got a little problem.

I've got a PowerEdge 840 it worked well but due to a bug, I ejected the HDD with the hot swap system.

But now it doesn't detect my HDD on my SCSI card (I think it's SCSI), and I can't launch PERC anymore because it doesn't detect my HDD.

But the led of the HDD rack blink when it is plugged.

How do I fix that ?

You need to know which controller ...

- the PERC 4 will have a CTRL-M prompt to enter the configuration utility from the POST screen

- the PERC 5/6 will have a CTRL-R prompt to enter the configuration utility from the POST screen

Which do you have?

How many drives do you have?

What was your RAID configuration?

PERC 4 means that you are indeed using a SCSI drive (not SAS or SATA).

A single drive means you have had the drive configured as a single-disk RAID 0.

Boot to CTRL-M, Configure, View/Add, select Disk View if prompted between Disk/NVRAM. Save the configuration on exit.

PERC 4 because I use Ctrl+M. I've got only 1drive I buy this server with RAID conf already configured and I didn't edited it, so I can't answer your question :(

As soon as you see CTRL-M, hold down the CTRL key and tap the M key once or twice per second until it lets you in.  If it doesn't work, then try a different keyboard - there are times that controller problems prevent you from accessing CTRL-M, but there is 'usually' an error message associated with it.

Then it sounds like you have a problem with your controller. You said you first removed the drive 'due to a bug' ... what exactly happened to prompt you to remove it?

So, did this drive/controller work before? Was it previously in use before attempting to install Ubuntu? What was installed before/what was it doing? I guess my question is: How do you know that this started with removing the drive? How do you know it wasn't already broken/malfunctioning?

(BTW ... hot-swap is pointless if there is a non-redundant RAID array :))

I was installing Ubuntu but there was a sort of freeze of  the installation, so I looked at the HDD and I removed and replugged it to see if it 'unfreeze' the installation ... I don't know why did I do that (huge mistake), probably to test the hot swap ( --' ) !? I feel stupid

1 - Yes it worked before. 2 - Yes. 3 - It was a Ubuntu ( I don't know the version) 4 - Because it worked before I just wanted to reinstall a clean ubuntu server. 5 - I don't know --'

I would try the following:

1. Clear the NVRAM using the jumpers on the motherboard:

support.dell.com/.../hom.pdf (p. 116-117)

2. If that doesn't work, then reseat the RAID controller in the expansion slot. Also, while removed from the system, unplug the RAID battery cable, reseat the memory DIMM on the controller, then reconnect the battery cable.

If you still can't get to CTRL-M, then I'd have to assume your controller is malfunctioning and would need to be replaced.
