Help with PERC 5i missing span on Raid 10, now showing Foreign
Hello Community,
I am far from an expect in Dell storage but have inherited an older PowerEdge with an attached storage array.
Over the weekend the storage failed and the RAID will not come up.
The configuration is a Raid 10 across 6 spans.
The RAID adapter now shows this as a Foreign Configuration, however it will not accept the configuration import.
Span 1 is showing as 'missing'.
Please see screenshots from DRAC, any help you can provide would be much appreciated.

AINS,
First off, do you have a backup of this data? What server model is this?
This doesn't look good, but we can see what we can do. To start I would like you to download this ISO, it is OMSA LIVE - linux.dell.com/.../OMSA71-CentOS6-x86_64-LiveDVD.iso
What we will do is boot to that and then from the GUI we will run a Dset report, located here -
www.dell.com/.../poweredge-r610
After running it then save the zip file to a USB or transfer it and then send it to me for review. I am sending you an email after I send this post.
The issue we are facing is that a raid 10 can have up to 1 failed drive per span, if both fail then the array will fail. I am going to see what state and when drives failed and what we can recover.

Hi I'm having exactly the same issue for the RAID 10.
I was having RAID 1 configured on 2 HDD's and RAID 10 configured on 6 drives(H310 mini controller), but after MB mulfunctioning and replacemenet RAID 1 was restored by importing config, however RAID 10 on 6 drives isn't going to be recovered as 3-rd span of 3 is showing as missing.
I was trying to change drive places in the server by moving them in to different ports but this didn't helped.
Can anyone help me on this?

Hi thx, for your reply.
I've already tried importing foreign RAID 10 configuration using RAID setup tool but it didn't worked, let me try to perform this action again so I can make a screenshot of the error which I've got:
Also I was trying to perfom foreign RAID config import from the IDrac but it failed too.

Hello,
If you import the foreign configuration it will attempt to bring the foreign drives back into the array and write the preserved cache. You must address the foreign configuration before you can do anything with that disk. If you do anything on drives you need to clear foreign then create new VD. You should not move the drives, please try to import foreign drives after making sure the drives are in their old places. You can try this in two different ways, both of which I am sharing the video links and manual as below;
from System setup https://dell.to/33VhYwl;
from PERC BIOS https://dell.to/2Y0zZ8O;
pg 45 https://dell.to/340shz8
Let us know if it helps

Also from Physical Disk Management I'm checking disks and all drives which were configured as RAID 10 members are shown as Ready
But while trying to import foreign config 4 of drives are being shown as Online and 2 as Ready

And here is how BIOS - System configuration - PERC H310 Mini - Foreign RAID configuration is looking:
Can you please clairfy what does this mean?

Hello,
You mentioned that you changed the location of the drives in the RAID 10 were drives that fell into this foreign belong. Please make sure it is in the order you made the first RAID 10
and please review this article unable to import foreign drives. related link is https://dell.to/3iCDSZl If you still can't import the foreign configuration, then you will need to reconfigure and restore from backups.

thx for your reply, I have a good news, I was able to restore both RAID configurations by:
and boom both drives are now working fine.
The only thing which is confusing me now is that iDrac isn't showing correct configuration of the VD, PD etc, it's still showing old config... I was trying to use different browsers as I was thinking that's just a cache but it's still showing old setup.

Hello xotabu4,
Try giving the system a flea power drain and check results:
(shut down, disconnect power cables, hold in power button 20 seconds with cords removed) then reconnect power and boot.
Note: The system will need to be booted to an OS or to the LifeCycle Controller (F10) for the DRAC to be able to refresh drive information.

Hi,
so today I've checked iDRAC storage configuration and everything is looking fine, without performing anything to the server.
