how do I backup perc 3/di raid container config?
I had a simple mirror disk on my Poweredge 4600 that was based on 2 18 gb physical drives.
This is the disk that runs my OS (win2k srvr).
After a drive failure some time ago in the mirror set, it was mistakenly turned into a RAID-0 stripe....no redundancy.
I am about to rebuild from scratch/backup tapes as I now have to break the RAID-0 virtual disk(thus losing my system partition data) and remake my raid-1 mirror set.
I want to make sure that in case something goes wrong or becomes too time consuming during the re-install process(this being a rather important email server) that I can still fall back on my non-redundant array.
I am redoing my OS install on 2 separate scsi disks so the original system disks will not be destroyed.
My question is this: Can I backup the PERC 3/di RAID config so that I could reinstate the non-redundant raid0 container info if necessary?
Or does the RAID controller read this info stored on the disks in the RAID-0 array?

Hi pgmcp,
The drives will retain a record of the array, however there are some concerns, If updating the controller's F/W do it with the old drives attached, and clear out any configuration with the drives removed from the controller. Attach the drives and the controller will see the array. Yor CAN add a drive to convert your RAID 0 into a RAID 5, this might be the safer method of regaining redundancy if you have a free HD slot that is.

No, but to do this you have to have the management S/W installed

Another question: If I opted to add a drive and convert from RAID0 to RAID5 would that not still wipe out the data on the said array?
