How many raid groups on r730xd with 24 SSD's for performance

Hi, we have a bunch of new r730xd dell servers with 24 SSD's (960GB)on it. Some of them have H730 Mini controller other ones, I think H730P. We need to deploy 4 elasticsearch data nodes per server, where we will store our data, so we will require high IOPS. As virtualization platform ESXi will be used. We plan to use RAID6 for this. So my question is do we need to setup 2 Raid6 groups, each group will have 12 disks. Or it is better to have 1 Raid6 group with 24 disks in it. Also other option could be 4 Raid0 groups with 6 disks each. But not sure if it is good idea to have some many Raid groups... Regards, Audrius

Hi,

The H730p can do 4 disk groups. RAID 0 should be faster than RAID 6 but no redundancy, so it depends on your tolerance for downtime. The amount of reads and writes may also effect the IOPS. The other consideration is that the throughput of the controller is limited by the x8 slot and is around 7.8 GBps. You may be best off trying all of the options and seeing what works best for your environment.

It is a pcie 3.0 port. Which has a theoretical limit of 985 MBps per lane and it is x8 card so it has 8 lanes. So that is 7.8 GBps. It does have eight 12 Gbps ports you just can’t have them all transferring at max speed at the same time. 4 raid groups shouldn’t cause a performance difference from 2 or 1.

Hi Josh,

thank you for the answer. But can you more elaborate what you mean by "throughput of the controller is limited by the x8 slot and is around 7.8 GBps""t The spec says, that it has 8 ports with ~ 12Gb/s. So, it should be about 12GB/s per controller.
Also, based on your knowledge does the number of raid groups impact performance? Because I could create 4 Raid0 groups and have the best performance...
