Loading Existing Raid 1data drives

I've not tried this before, but I have a pair of raid 1 drives that are running in another server (HP) that I want to pull and place in my new power-edge 2950 server. I'm sure they will show up as foreign, but when it converts it to local raid, will it erase my data?

Is there a proper process to do this? I have another 1tb set and I expect that I will just have to connect the drives externally and load the data.

Hello, there may be a good chance that the controller's RAID meta-data is not compatible from the HP server the PE2950.  Yes, it will show as foreign but it shouldn't automatic destroy the data.  It will just fail to import. If this is the case, the you'll have to wipe the data by creating a new RAID with slow initialization to clear the drives.  There may also be firmware issues as the drives may not be Dell certified. You should try to flash the firmware of the drives if applicable, but I've seen this not work on some models.

Let us know if you need for clarification that we can help with.

If the data is critical, i would also backup the data on the HP system first. There is always rare possibility that the import may not fail, but import incorrectly and thus corrupt the data.  Better to play it safe.
