mirroring a raid 5 logical drive????

on perc2, 3drive raid 5 with 9 gig logical drive setup, can you add a 4th 36 gig drive and have it mirror the logical drive?
Also, since this is a 2 channel controller with a 6 hot swap backplane, is there a way to mirror on the second channel? Or do i misunderstand the channel concept?

Hi Slumpy,

If you have a splittable backplane you could have 3 drives on the 2nd channel, otherwise you would need an external drive enclosure and cables to use the second channel.

The 4 th drive could be setup as a RAID 0 and have the O/S do the mirroring, but M/S advises that mirrored drives be the same geometry and speed, so I do not advise doing this.

Best would be to obtain 3 more drives of the exact same model and reconfigure your RAID 5 into a RAID 50. If the exact same is not available the rotational speed should match, and try to stay with the same interface speed (LVD, U3/160 or U320). If you must go with newer drives with faster interfaces update the system BIOS,  ESM, controller F/W, and controller driver to the latest before installing the new drives.

P.S. the PE600 tag you registered only had a 1 year warranty which is now expired you have till 1/12 to purchase an extended warranty, after which a onsite service call to inspect and run diags would be required to reinstate a warranty. Call 800-247-4618 M-F business hrs. to purchase warranty extension for US customers.

Thanks Gary. I do not have a split backplane. Can I just plug in 2 36 gig drives and they will mirror if one is set as hot spare? or will this require an external drive with one drive on each channel. The server I am working on is a pe 2300, code G4XJB. I only want a hardware mirror.
