New Hard Disk Space
Have a new PowerEdge R720
we have the OS on the 2 SSDR SAS drives installed,
I have 14 1.2TB SAS drives, how do I carve up volumes on this? do I do it from the Raid Controller?

You can configure the 14 drives into their own Virtual Disks either with the Raid controller or, depending on the OS you installed, you can also do it from within the OS via OpenManage Server Administrator. If you let me know the specific OS installed, I can get you the proper version, if supported.

So I could blow away the existing raid 5 and create smaller arrays? each one being a volume in Window?
What type of failure do you mean?

This is for an Exchange 2010 Database server. Is there any advantage, setting up the volumes at the raid level over the OS level?

Hey Chris,
We are running Windows 2008 R2. the 14 drive were setup as 1 raid 5 drive now.

Sorry, I had misunderstood you. I thought you were asking how to configure the remaining drives into a Raid array. With the raid already being configured, what you are wanting is to partition the Raid 5 into multiple volumes/partitions. To do this you would need to go to Disk Mgmt, in the OS, and you will see the Raid 5 as Unallocated Space, you can format and configure those volumes from there.

The advantage would be independent redundancy with the data, essentially if you have a failure it wouldn't effect all the data. Just the data in that array. That is the pro, the con would be the amount of remaining disk space. Creating smaller arrays you will lose more space to redundancy than you would with the single raid 5. So it really comes down to preference.

I think we are going to leave it as a 13TB volume and slice it up at the OS level. Thanks for all the help.

Meaning if you had a failed hard drive in say a 2 drive raid 1, and didn't replace or rebuild it, and the other drive fails. Then the risk to data is only on those 2 drives, not the Raid 5. Which would only require 2 of the 14 drives to fall offline and the array would be in a failed state.
You could delete it, and then create the separate smaller arrays. Now if you already have data on the Raid 5, then it will be lost when you delete the array and create the new ones. Each of the new arrays/virtual disks will show as seperate disks of unallocated space. Which you can then partition as you desire in the OS.
