New server drive configuration
We are trying to decide on the drive configuration of our next server. We are a small office and plan on buying a T640, PERC H730P, 64GB RAM, 10 core processor. We need approximately 3tb of drive space and plan on running a few VM's on this server. The VMs consist of limited use file server, DC and 4 Windows 10 workstations. The SAS drives are out of my budget and trying to determine the number of drives to purchase. I plan on using RAID10 because I'm most comfortable with that technology. We are currently using a 7 year old DELL server and with 4 drives and S100 controller. For the most part the server is meeting our needs but it is starting to show it's age.
I'm trying to determine which of the following I should get
4, 2tb RAID10, I like the simpilicty of four drives but worry about drive performance. Although this server is faster than the current server and I suspect the four drives will keep up.
8, 1tb RAID10, 8 drives should provide plenty of performance but the number of drives concerns me from a point a failure perspective.
I would love to through a single Samsang SSD in the server but I haven't read good things about using non DELL drives in a DELL server.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hello
The H730 and the S100 are almost incomparable. I would not suggest installing more drives with the expectation of better performance. The H730 will be a huge upgrade from the S100. You will get much better performance just by using that controller. If the S100 was meeting your needs or close to meeting your needs then the H730 will far exceed them.
Thanks

Thank you for the reply, I was thinking more spindles in a RAID10 configuration would give better throughput. You had a good point that the 730 will be much faster than the S100.
