PE2850 - RAID 5 Failed
I called, but dell will not support servers bought used if the transfer of ownership paper work isn't filed???
I'm having a similar issue w SBS 2008 on a 2850 I have a windows backup image from a couple days ago.
This happened after Re-boot from this weeks Secuity updates.
I have 3 physical drives Logical Drives (01)
On boot before Crt-M
Perc 4e/di Standard FW 5b2d Dram 2
Battery Module is present on adapter
1 Logical Drive(s) found on the Host Adapter
0 Physical Drive(s) found on the Host Adapter
1 Logical Drive(s) Failed
1 Logical Drive(s) handled by Bios
0 Physical Drive(s) found on the Host Adapter
Logical Drive 0
Raid 5
Size = 572160MB
StripeSize = 64kb
Write Policy = WRback
Read Policy = Adaptive
Cache Policy = Direct IO
#Stripse = 3
State = offline
All drives are 286080 MBs Fujitsu's
Drive 0 in a Raid 5 on perc 4e/di Dell 2850
ID 0:0 FAIL Drive info media errors 0 other errors 3 Drive info Amber Lights
ID 0:1 FAIL Drive info media errors 0 other errors 3 Drive info Amber Lights
ID 0:2 online Drive info media errors 0 other errors 3 Drive info Green Lights
If i go to objects > Physical Drive and select one of the Failed drives >Rebuild. Doesn't matter which of the 2 failed drives it almost automatically says Error.
I'm Afraid to move forward, since Dell will not give support & I have 1 drive that is showing it is online and good.
Recommendations please?
found another post saying the same thing raid - Dell PowerEdge 2800 Logical Disk Failure: Any Possible ...
Usually Microsoft Updates that have downloaded, but are waiting to be installed can cause this.
Before applying the updates and restarting, I ran several diagnostic tests on the hardware and everything came up green. Both hard drives also displayed green lights
I then chose 'Install updates and Restart'.
Upon reboot, immediately after the 'SCSI scanning' hits 100%, both hard drives go from green to blinking amber and I get a '1 logical drive found/failed' error message.
I've tried reseating the drives without any change.

Dell must verify ownership before providing support, for a number of reasons.
Ownership Transfer:
www.dell.com/.../IdentifySystem
You cannot rebuild a drive into an offline array. The array must first be online before you can rebuild a drive. Your only choice is to FORCE ONLINE one of the failed drives. It matters which drive you force online - you need to force online the LAST drive to fail. If you do not know whether or not one was already offline at the time of the crash, then you either need to find out or take a gamble.
You can try to find out in one of two ways ... the System Event Log (hardware log, stored by ESM/BMC) or the controller log. You can get the SEL by booting to CTRL-E during post or by booting to an OMSA Live CD; you can only get a controller log by booting to an OMSA Live CD.
Microsoft updates cannot cause a drive or array to go offline.

Yes, force online disk 1, verify everything is working, then rebuild disk 0.
This is all assuming you have a good backup and and no faulty disks.

At 10% rebuild.

Booted up to the CentOS disk and got this. Looks like Physical disk 0:0 First. Then Virtual disk controller and last Physical 0:1.
So by your instructions I should " force online the LAST drive to fail" being > 0:1
Then rebuild with in the Raid Bios Crtl+M

"What are the steps to force a PE 2850 logivela drive to online?"
You don't ... you force online individual disks in a failed/offline state.
"logical drives 2 & 3 show they are offline"
How are your logical drives laid out? What RAID level? How many disks? What size? What is the status of EACH drive?

Oh, yeah ... this wasn't your thread ... always best to start a new thread, because two problems are NEVER the same.
So, you have
RAID 1 = 0,1 - both showing ONLINE?
RAID 1 = 2,3 - both showing OFFLINE?
So, what is the issue? You just lost the data on your second array and need to get it back online? If so, how certain are you that one of the disks was not already failed when you discovered the data was offline?

the drives should be mirrors. there are 4 disks in total in the server the windows 2003 OS is mirrored on 0 & 1 and only 2 disks for data. Not sure what you mean by status of each drive when I ctrl M at POST it shows offline for both 2 & 3

So, why did you post an issue with RAID 5?

Yes I cant access the data on the second array. Both drives flash amber after the disk scanning on POST.
I believe both drives where fine on Friday evening as the server went down on Saturday evening.

Then you need to force online one of the drives, and once you make sure that everything appears to be ok, THEN rebuild the remaining drive.
