perc 5i accidentally deleted virtual disk

Can someone work a miracle for me?

I accidentally deleted theVirtual Disk on my 2950 Perc5/i.  Is there any way to recover?  I haven't tried anything yet because I'm scared I will mess it up more than it already is (if that's possible).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Scared is good, because it usually keeps you from doing anything stupid :)

First, do you have a backup - just in case?  If not, how critical is the data?

If you have a backup or the data is not critical, then you need to recreate the VD without initializing it.  This is called a retag.  You must know the EXACT settings used to create the array (stripe size, VD size, etc.).

Is this the only RAID array on your server?  What is the RAID config?  How many drives?  What sizes?  How did the VD get deleted?

No backup.  We're not really sure what is on the powervault, but want to go through it before formatting it.  It's most likely a bunch of legacy PSTs.  No backups, unfortunately.

This isn't on a server, but a PowerVault MD1000.  Sorry, I should have mentioned that in the original post.  It had a single RAID 5 with 5 400GB disks.

It got deleted because I had a brain fart and forgot I hooked it up to the server I am building.  I was going in to create a new RAID for the internal server drives.  I hit F2 and selected DELETE VD.

There is a chance that this won't work, so if you MUST get the data back, it is better to start looking now.

Otherwise, you need to go to CTRL-R and configure a new RAID 5, but MAKE SURE that the Advanced and Initialize boxes are NOT checked.  Once complete, then reboot to see if the data is accessible.

theflash1932:     THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU !!!!!!

You just saved my SYSTEM partition and countless hours of setup and configuration.  Ironically, I was configuring RAID for a couple of SAS drives to use as a VD for my SYSTEM partition BACKUP when I accidentally cleared it's config.  I was going to start over, but found your post and it saved me from recreating the original SYSTEM and initializing and erasing it.

This saved my butt.  First I had to go to the Controller header, foreign disk options and clear that.  Then the above got my drives working again.  Thank you!
