PERC 6i Controller shows all drives as failed
Hello,
I have a R410 server with a PERC 6i RAID controller which has currently 4 x 250G SATA drives installed. Everything works and life is good. However, I need to replace these drives with bigger ones. So I purchased 4 x 600G drives. I removed the SATA ones and installed the new SAS drives. I cleared the current RAID configuration. The RAID controller detects all 4 drives correctly and shows them as 'Ready'. However, when I try to created any new Virtual Disk (no matter RAID1, 5 or 10) all drives start blinking orange and they are being displayed as 'failed' in the RAID configuration tool. After I reboot the server I am back at square 1 and no virtual disk is being shown, the drives show as ready again and I can start over but with the same result.
So I did some research on this and found a post were someone stated that Dell released several servers which do not allow non-dell certify disks installed in these servers and describes a similar behavior.
Since the post came from a non Dell engineer I wonder how accurate it is and if that is really the issue I am facing here.
Any help is being appreciated.
Thank you
Marcus

No, this is not the issue. The PERC 6 never blocked non-certified drives. The original firmware for the H700 did block non-certified drives, but the block was lifted via firmware update. Dell "servers" have never blocked non-certified drives - only external storage devices (MD-series) have drive restrictions (very common in storage devices of all makes).
One or more of your drives could be faulty.
Did you also Initialize the array?
Your drives could simply be incompatible (can happen with non-certified drives) but less likely with SAS.
You could try updating the firmware on both the controller (BIOS and ESM first) and the drives.

Was this ever solved? I'm experiencing the exact same problem with Seagate drives from a Dell/EMC SAN which I'm trying to put in a PowerEdge 1950 with PERC 6/i. I can create the VD, but it immediately afterwards marks it red, the LED's on server blink amber and I can't continue. I can reboot and delete/recreate the VD, but with the same result. BIOS and controller firmware is most recent (BIOS 2.7.0 and FW 6.3.3). It seems like it's blocking the drives... I'm considering replacing the PERC 6/i with a H200 for HBA (Proxmox with ZFS) but I don't want to spend the money if I'm stuck at boot again...

Exactly the same problem here. I have a Poweredge T410 with Perc 6I and I'm trying to build a RAID 6 virtual disk with 6 2TB HP HMRP2000S5xnN7.2 SAS drives. All drives are reported as Ready in the Physical Management Window but as soon as I attempt to create the virtual disk the new virtual disk 0 is shown in red and all drives are shown as Failed. I've updated the BIOS and the Perc 6i controller firmware. Is there any way around this?
