Perc H700 - Create new Virtual disk fails
Hello,
We have PowerEdge R510 with PERC H700 Raid controller.
This server had 2 VDISK:
RAID1 : 2 x 36 GB
RAID6 : 12 x 2 TB
The RAID1 array died because we lost both disks. The RAID6 array is still good and visible in the Raid management interface. Now, we just want to replace the RAID1 array and reinstall the OS but we want to keep the RAID6 array absolutely untouched since it is good.
We replaced the 2 36 GB disk and we can also see them in as unused disks in the management interface.
We tried to create a new VDISK from these 2 36 GB disks (RAID1). We can select the disks and all other options but when we click on OK to go and create the VDISK, we get a pop up telling that the creation has failed.
Why is it failing ?Are we supposed to clear somehow the old RAID1 array before we can grate the new one ?

Hi @GSoucy,
In that case, you may need to remove the old RAID1 VD, as the RAID controller has it's configuration retain for previous RAID1 VD in the drive slots and when you tried to do a new VD, it may return an error.

Hi @GSoucy,
Did you install both replacement disk into the same slot as the 2 failed disk?
Can you try to install into other slots in the server and create a RAID1 VD?
Also, is there any particular reason you're using 36GB size drives?

Thanks for the reply.
No, there is no other slots available.
The original disks were 36gb and this is enough for the root partition. The 2 disks are on slots 12 and 13, inside the server.

Hello Buddy,
action plan is as follows:-
1. Reboot the syste,m.
2. Enter into raid BIOS when prompted.
3. Check the VD status of raid 1.
4. Delete VD(if you are able to see any raid 1 VD with the associated disks).
5. Click on create new VD.
6. click on fast initilization.
7. See the VD status.
8. Both array Should be optimal.
9. Select the bootable VD.
10. Save confg.
11. Exit and reboot.

We had to highlight the root controller (top of the page) and via F2 (operations), select Clear Cache. Once in that menu, we saw a cache with lost disk. We cleared that cache . After that, we were able to go back to create a new Virtual disk and also select it as the bootable disk.
