PERC3 DC/L Beeping
Hi all,
I have a 2001 vintage PERC 3 DCL. I replaced all the drives last year, around March with Segate Cheetah 73 GIG (3 - raid 5).
The techs at the NOC tell me the card is beeping again.
Single steady beeps.
I everyones humble opinion, is it pernding disaster, or simply that the card detected 'an' error and is now beeping.
The last time this happened, I replaced all the original Fijisu drives, and theey are all still running happily on my home PC>
I run FreeBSD, does anyone suspect an fsck will solve the PERC beeps?

Hi TTN,
No A fsck (file system check) will not resolve the beeping. The controller card is telling you that ONE of the hard drives in the RAID array is offline. Have the people at the site look at the drives, if one of them has an amber light on it, have them reseat the drive (while the server is up) this should cause the controller to initiate a rebuild of the offline drive. The duty cycle of the beep should change from 50% to 33% (from one second on one second off, to one second on two seconds off) then quit if the rebuild attempt was successful, or go back to 50% if it failed.
Once you've done this, please get to the server and call Dell tech support. There was likely not a thing wrong with the toshiba drives. Dell is recommending updating the F/W on the PERC 3 DCL.

Hi Grant,
You have not told us if this is a system with the drives attached with a cable (68 pin interface) or if they are in carriers and plug into a back plane (80 pin interface).
For cable attached drives, you have to open the case, and disconnect the cable from the offline drive. Verify which drive is offline in the controller BIOS (CTRL M during POST to enter the BIOS) Generally you have to turn off the system inorder to reseat the drives if they are cable attached. Remove the data cable from the drive, go thru post and get into the controller BIOS to make it see that the drive is gone. Then power back off and reconnect the cable, and now when it sees the drive it will attempt to rebuild it.
While you are in the BIOS you can silence the alarm, Disable is an option but you need to make sure you reenable the alarm after the rebuild is done.
For the BP attached drives just open the drive carrier handle and slide the drive back an inch then reinstall the drive and close the handle.
