PERC5i SAS disk question

Good morning all.

I just bought a PERC5/i and 2 10k Segate SAS disks second hand (all branded with Dell Logos) and i am trying to figure out some stuff... if these questions have been answered, please fell free to recycle bits...

The card has 2 Channels... Looking around online for cables, i am finding SAS (which look like the connections on the PERC) -> 4 SATA cables... does this mean this card could run 8 HDDs off it?

Given i have 2 SAS disks, is there a cable that allows me to run 2 SAS disks off one channel? this way allowing me to have the 2 SAS disks and 4 standard SATA drives?

Any recommendations on cables for this card?

Thanks in advance

I havent figured out what system just yet, it will be going into... but it wont be a DELL branded box... could be a SAN or my workstation... If it can support 8 SATA disks, it might go into the SAN... the SAS disks could be handy in the workstation though... how could it effect the implementation?

What system are you putting this into, because implementation can depend and vary based on the machine its installed in.  Basically though, each channel can support up to 4 drives by having a 4-drop cable - those cables will connect to a SAS or SATA.  The PERC 5 does not support mixing SAS and SATA.

If it is not going into a Dell machine (server or workstation) then I'm not sure I have any advice for you.  The 4-drop cable should be adequate to attach the drive to the controller in pretty much any system with cabled hard drives.  If you have a system with a hot-swap backplane, then you will need a different cable - depending (again) on hardware.

Thanks for the info. You wouldent myany chance know the cable type code for this controller? The case this could end up in has mini sas internal connections. Think they are sff-8087 connections.

The PERC controller supports SAS and SATA drives at the same time.  SAS and SATA drives cannot be mixed on the same virtual disk but, they can coexist on the same controller.

SWEET! Hmmm.... got me some testing to do!

I though the PERC 6 could while the PERC 5 could not.

The PERC6's main benefit is support for raid 6 (and 60). The PERC6E also gained the ability (with an up to date bios) to connect to an MD1000 on both sides for more bandwitch and failover.

PERC 6 also supports SSD drives (with the latest FW).  PERC 5 does not.  SSD drives cannot be mixed with SAS or SATA on the same virtual disk, only on the same controller.
