Power Edge 2900 Virtual disk failed

I have a Power Edge 2900 server, PERC 5/i RAID controller, the server just cannot connect last Friday using remote desktop, and it's hang, so do a hard reboot using power button, but the server cannot boot up, and shows following:  logical disk failed, DSC_0560.JPG

and then i hit CTRL-R to go to RAID utility, show following: Disk 01:04 was failed long time ago, but it's working without problem. the problem is the RAID 5 is now offline, and cant boot up, what can i do?  can i force the RAID online? thanks

Thank you for the screenshots.

Try forcing the virtual drive online. if unsuccessful, do a retag.

  1. Create a new array using the same stripe, RAID level, and member disks as before. The caching options and size don't matter.
  2. Do NOT intialize the array when you create it. An initialization is a low level format that will wipe the data
  3. Boot up the server and check to see if the data is present.

If the data is still accessible, reseat 01:04. If it comes back online, set as a hot spare to rebuild back into the array.

Let me know how it goes.

is it first i have to select delete VD, and then re-create a new array?

the most important thing is DO NOT initialize, the data will still present, right?DSC_0600.JPG

i think my problem is simular to this

https://www.dell.com/community/PowerEdge-HDD-SCSI-RAID/Is-it-Possible-to-Rebuild-RAID-on-PERC-5-i-without-knowing/m-p/3822007

i also do not know the original setting of the RAID 5, as the above posts said by "theflash1932", i only have one chances to do a re-tag, am i right?

Hi,

I missed the 1st time I looked at your screenshot that PD2 is missing. Retag would not be an option with a missing drive.

The one thing you can try is to see if you can force PD4 online. If it will go online, reboot and see if the Virtual disk will go to degraded mode. If so, replace PD2 and set as a hot spare to allow it rebuild into the array.

Do you have a tested backup of your data? If not and there is critical data you need to recover, you may want to consider using a data recovery service before going forward. Currently with 2 drives out of the Raid 5, the data is considered lost at this point. But you may want to use data recovery before trying to recover the array.
