PowerEdge 2900 - SAS Controller Daughter Card Missing

Hello,

I just purchased an old PowerEdge 2900 server. I intend on using it as a NAS and have purchased a few SAS hard drives to use with it. However, the SAS daughter card is completely missing. I'm wondering if I should try to find an original card to replace it, or if there's better options available. Forgive me if I'm asking a question with a seemingly obvious answer, this is my first time messing around with servers.

Thanks!

Hi @jackhunt3r,

Everybody is here to learn as I am too. We'll try to provide opinions and experiences as we go along.

Back to you question, I'm unsure if there is any better option. PE2900 is very limited to its support capability on hardware. This server supports SAS5i or PERC5i. You might want to source of its suitable card. DPN# HN359 for SAS5i and DPN# GP298. You mentioned you want to use it as NAS, do try to check if the SAS controller supports the NAS OS that you're going to install. Beyond any other OS in this list: https://dell.to/40cJFuC, I'm unsure if the server may be an issue when it comes to install OS that you desire.

Thanks!

I've ordered a replacement, and hopefully I'll be able to make it work. Thankfully, I primarily bought the server as a learning tool, so getting it up and running quickly is not a concern.

I appreciate the help
