PowerEdge 840: Which Raid Controller needed for (hot)plugable HDD?

Hello,

I'm from Germany and searching a "low-cost" Server with front-side detachable HDD.  (for simple replace in error situatuion)
Real hot-plug is not necessary. It is no problem to shutdown the Server befor replace, but without  opening the case would be best)

When I read the documentation for PowerEdge 840, then there are front-side removable HDD's possible.
Is this possible with "simple" SATA Drives?

But which Controller should i choose?

There are :
1.  SAS5iR controller
2.  PERC5E RAID controller (256MB cache)
3.  PERC5i RAID controller (256MB cache)

Performance is not the key-factor. Raid-1 is sufficient.

Thanks

Hello, am also interested in this topic. Can anybody help us with determining right config for SATA drives being hot-swapable? BR Peter Braun
