PowerEdge R410 - "PCI Training Error" with PERC 6/i and PERC H700 modular

Folks:

I recently purchased an R410. It came with the factory installed PERC H700 integrated (black PCIe slot) and appropriate cabling. I'd like to install a fibe-optic network card in it but with only one PCIe slot available and that one being used by the H700, I needed to get a RAID card that would work in the white PCIe slot. After researching, I found that the H700 modular will work as well as the PERC 6/i, so I purchased the H700 first. After installing, I reset the iDRAC settings but received a "PCIe Training Error - Integrated RAID" error. I searched forums and such and found no useful remedy, so I acquired a PERC 6/i modular. Upon installation and clearing the iDRAC settings, I received the same "PCIe Training Error - Integrated RAID" error.

Yes, I've reattached the SAS cable to the PCIe riser card for the PERC 6/i and the H700.

I've not yet found any useful information that remedies this error.

I find it difficult to believe that both these cards are defective.

Can someone verify that I can use the PERC 6/i modular or PERC H700 modular in the PowerEdge 410 (BIOS Rev: 1.14)?

If so, how do I correct this error?

The following are the two RAID cards I have purchased that produce the "PCIe Training Error - Integrated RAID" error.
PERC H700 Modular - R598N
PERC 6/i Modular - H145K

Hi,

With the given part number of the 2 pictures that you attached, the RAID controllers aren't compatible with R410. They are for modular servers, M series. As for the slot availability, there are slot priorities, please refer to page 97: https://dell.to/49n4Yid

You can look for SAS6iR RAID controller, if you need slot 1 to be available.

@DELL-Joey C Thanks for the input. I am a tad confused though. The cards listed on page 97 of the user manual are for the black PCIe slot. As stated, I already have an H700i that was factory installed for that purpose. My point is that I am trying to free that slot for a fibre network card.

So which RAID controllers will plug into the white 'STORAGE_PCIE" slot? I thought the two I have where supposed to be compatible with the white "STORAGE_PCIE" slot.

Thank you.

Peace and blessings.

Hi,

White PCIe slot are as followed by the table in the user guide which is PERC 6/i. DPN# T774H. R598N and H145K are not compatible with R410. They are for modular servers, M series.

@DELL-Joey C  Hi Joey: Thanks for your input. Okay, you're helping get this narrowed down. The user manuals are a tad confusing on the various disk controller card options (there are no DELL PN's). The part number you say is the correct RAID controller (T774H) is a full height PCIe card meant for the black slot, not the white storage slot. As stated earlier, the R410 came with the PERC H700 Integrated in the black PCIe slot, so using the PERC 6/i would be senseless. :(

Looking (again) in the R410 Tech Manual, section 11.1, I see that ONLY the "SAS 6/iR Modular" can go into the white storage slot.

When I search for that card on eBay, I get the DELL PN:HM0303, which looks correct as it has no heat sink, thus no interference with the PCIe card in the black slot above it. However, The "SAS 6/iR Modular" only supports RAID 0 and 1 and I'm wanting RAID5+. This is probably how I got to the PERC 6/i modular and the H700 modular in the first place. I guess that the PERC 6/i modular and the H700 modular would work in the white storage slot but the BIOS won't recognize them, hence the "PCIe Training Error" message. I guess I'll never get to use the Fibre NIC after all. Sigh...

So to clear this up for anyone else, if you want RAID0/1 then the "SAS 6/iR Modular" (DELL #HM0303) will work in the white storage slot, which freesup the black PCIe slot. If you want RAID0,1,5,6,etc, then you have to use the black slot with a full size controller.

Thanks again.

Peace and blessings.
