Poweredge R620 RAID controller disapeared!
Hi,
I have an R620 which I have been using to learn how to use VMware. It worked very well, but then I went off to sea for a few months, leaving it powered down.
I turned it back on when I returned from work, and it no longer booted.
On logging into the iDRAC, I could see that it wasn't booting because it could no longer see a boot volume. Looking further it could not see the RAID controller.
I powered it down and re-seated the RAID controller (a PERC H710p), powered up and still no controller. Someone suggested disconnecting the battery on the RAID controller, so I tried that, and it still doesn't see the controller.
I can see some of these controllers on eBay for not very much, and I'm wondering if I should just buy one, or if there is something else I should try first, or should I just give up on the R620 and get something a little newer.
Any opinions or suggestions welcome
Thanks!
Paul.

Hello, thanks for choosing Dell. It's up to you that you get a new controller to try with we can not guarantee it's gonna fix the issue: it might not be the controller also the data safety will not be guaranteed.

Hi,
Thanks for getting back to me - appreciate it might be something like a bus controller chip on the motherboard, but was just curious if there was some other obvious thing to try in order to bring the system back to life. I'll order the new RAID controller today.
Cheers!
Paul.

Hi,
Card is ordered - was hoping it would be here yesterday, but no such luck. Crossing fingers that it sorts things out.
Worst case its back to square one and another server from eBay (which is where this one came from - and it has lasted a few years, so I have no complaints really).

Hi All,
The new controller arrived, with what looks like a brand new (much flatter) battery. Swapped the units and I can now see the controller and the associated disks - currently saying no boot device, and I am feeling a little lazy and not wanting to drag a VGA monitor down to it (it lives in the basement).
Question: The virtual console, which you can launch from the iDRAC does not seem to want to work, and apparently this is because it uses Flash, which no browser on my machine (running Linux Mint) wants to let me use. Is there another way of getting a virtual console up? I am willing to run Windows for a short while in order to save my back
Thanks!
Paul.

Hello SOIJimbo,
Try different virtual console plug in: recommend: HTML5. can also try: java, Native
If those don't work then try the Windows system.
For the Boot Device, try enter the PERC BIOS and the last tab, Management I think, make sure the correct VD is set as Boot VD.
