PowerEdge R730xd - adding SSD for SQL database and transaction log
I've got a PowerEdge R730xd (PERC H730) running Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V. It's got (16) 600gb 15k SAS drives in a few different virtual disks for our virtual machines.
I thought about adding some SSDs, create a new virtual disk and volume, for our SQL server database and transaction log. We are also using Spiceworks I'd try to move that database to the SSD volume.
So I'm looking for some advice about the drives and configuration. I just need a small amount of storage, but pretty fast.
I was looking at the 480gb SSD (SAS) or the 800gb SSD (SATA) Hot-plug Drive. I was thinking about buying two and use it in a RAID 1. Does anyone have any experience with this? How much speed increase do you think I will see? Do they have to be SAS or can I use SATA in the 25 drive bay in front? Do I need a third for a hot-spare too?

Hello
You can have both SAS and SATA, they just can't be in the same virtual disk. If you want to have a hot spare for the SSDs then you will need to add another disk. SSD, SAS, and SATA cannot be mixed in a virtual disk, so the SAS spindle hot spare cannot be used as a hot spare for either SAS or SATA SSDs.

Excellent information thanks. What about the speed aspect? Does anyone have a sense of the difference in speed for:
1. existing RAID 6 with (10) 600gb 15k SAS (in shared environment)
2. new RAID 1 with (2) 800gb SATA SSD (dedicated to a few light-use databases)
3. new RAID 1 with (2) 480gb SAS SSD (dedicated to a few light-use databases)
How would I find this information?
