Problem enabling SED: Security subsystem errors detected for Disk X in Backplane 1 of Integrated RAID Controller 1

Server: R730xd
Controller: H730P
Drives: 2x Samsung PM1643 (RAID 1)

In iDRAC when I choose Storage > Virtual Disks > Manage > Virtual Disk Actions > Encrypt Virtual Disk and click Apply the tasks complete successfully in the job queue but in the list of virtual disks the "Secured" property stays at "No" and two errors are logged to the Storage Events log (see below). The drives are TCG-compliant SED and the controller has been setup with a security key. Is there something that I'm missing or is the SED feature of these drives incompatible with the controller?

Hi,

Hope this helps.

Security subsystem errors detected for . Verify the disk is a Secure Encrypted Disk and is not locked. If it is not, replace the disk with a Secure Encrypted Disk. See the storage hardware documentation for more information.

Thanks, but I have verified that the disk is a Secure Encrypted Disk based on the disk's marketing material and the iDRAC physical disk properties (Security Status: Encryption Capable, Self Encrypting Drive Capability: Capable), and as far as I know it's not "locked". I'm not sure what it means by locked though as there isn't a password prompt anywhere to unlock it. I've tried adding a System Password in the BIOS but it doesn't make this work.

No, unfortunately. I've performed the same operations (aside from the fact that I'm encrypting an existing virtual disk instead of creating a new one) but I still get the errors.

Hi,

There may be something we missed. Please also check and ensure these written steps by here https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/de-de/poweredge-rc-h830/perc9ugpublication/creating-secured-virtual-disks?guid=guid-a02cb572-bfd8-4be4-ad4d-0402bdf01416&lang=en-us

Please ensure iDRAC and PERC controller FW is up to date. in H70P FW, there is a fix release for "-Resolved an issue where controllers may hang during firmware initialization at post with SED drives." it could be related to your issue.

iDRAC 2.75.75.75  https://dl.dell.com/FOLDER06305188M/1/iDRAC-with-Lifecycle-Controller_Firmware_KRCXX_WN64_2.75.75.75_A00.EXE

H730P 25.5.7.0005  https://dl.dell.com/FOLDER06421093M/1/SAS-RAID_Firmware_N3T11_WN64_25.5.7.0005_A15.EXE

Also you can try to soft reset iDRAC. Sometime iDRAC need to be reset while it can't show logs properly. it doesn't change your settings.

  1. In the lower right corner of the overview screen, the Quick Launch Tasks are shown.
  2. Click Reset iDRAC
  3. Confirm the action.
  4. The iDRAC will not be reachable for few minutes, while the system performance is not affected.

If the above steps will not work for you, We can check drives are compatible or not. Could share with us screenshots of physical disks>health and properties(please expand it) from iDRAC? Honestly, I can't be sure it can apply to existing VD. It might be the issue.

Let us know if this help

Hi,

I've confirmed that the iDRAC firmware is 2.75.75.75 and the H730P firmware is 25.5.7.0005. I've also tried the iDRAC soft reset as well as deleting the Virtual Disk and creating a new one starting with encryption. Here's the Health and Properties screenshot:

I included the wrong picture, that was the Health and Properties section of the Virtual Disks page. Here it is for the Physical Disks page:

Hi, unfortunately what we are seeing right now doesn't contain enough information. It doesn't seem to support T10 SED. Is this a Dell part?

As far as I know, T10 PI is used for passing checksum data to the drive and isn't related to the encryption functionality. It's not a Dell certified part.

Hi, please note that we won't be able to give you any words on 3rd party parts, I’m afraid. Have a good one and let us know if you have any further questions.
