R410 - LCD Error - how to remove?
Hi all :)
I've got an R410 server, which runs Win2008 SP1 (OEM install). (x3 HDD in Raid5)
It also runs Exch2007 , and just happens to have an issue which i gotta fix at some point! :D
Problem i have is the LCD display is in 'Orange', and wont go back to Blue, reason for the Orange light is:
Couple of months ago, OMSA reported a 'potential' disk fault (0.0.2), so purchased x2 identical drives ready to do a swap.
On the day i am about to do the swap, it all goes wrong!!!!!
The 1st drive (0.0.0) goes offline stating its a dead drive!! (Gulp!!), which panicked me given its an Exchange server now showing 1 working disc and 1 potential faulty disk and now a dead disc!!!!
In panic, i put the new drive in the spare empty slot (0.0.3), but the system picks it up and states it is a "Foreign Disk" and cant do anything with it ?!!!!!!!
Arrghhh! took the drive out as figured i cant turn it into a hot swap!
Anyway, Out comes the dead disk (0.0.0), so installed new drive, but the system wont pick up the disc, so RAID Rebuild wont work ! :(
Anyway, after 20 minutes of panic, the Rebuild on disk 0.0.0 starts automatically, and then all is good.... I then proceed to swap out disk 0.0.2 and the rebuild works and all is good....... So panic over for now!
However, since that, the LCD display is now in orange with the message: Harddrive 3 error: E1812 Drive 3 removed.
How do i clear it so it goes back to blue ??????
I havent rebooted the server since, but would'nt mind fitting the spare new HDD (yes, bought another identical drive) in the server and making it a hot spare, just dont know how ?
Any ideas please ?!
cheers

It should go away after a reboot, or you can clear the ESM (hardware) Log.
Friendly advice: don't panic. Stupid mistakes are made when people panic. Your situation turned out ok, but more often than not, panic clouds judgement. Call Dell at the first sign of trouble, or post here.
Here is what you need to know about your situation:
Any drive with configuration information on it not matching the configuration on the controller will be flagged with a foreign configuration, and you cannot do ANYTHING with the disk until that foreign configuration is resolved. In your case, you need to CLEAR the foreign config (in the CTRL-R BIOS utility - highlight controller on VD MGMT screen, F2, Foreign, Clear ... in OMSA - Storage, PERC, Information/Configuration, Foreign/Clear from dropdown menu). Once cleared, if the rebuild does not begin automatically, then you need to assign the disk as a hot-spare to begin the rebuild.
You can assign your extra disk as a hot-spare in OMSA by going to Storage, PERC, Virtual Disks, and Assign Dedicated Hot-spare from the drop down for your RAID 5. If your drives are very large, you might consider converting your 3-disk RAID 5 to a 4-disk RAID 6, which instead of a having a hot spare ready to rebuild in case of a disk failure, you would have that disk actively participating and protecting the array at all times (RAID 6 has a 2-disk failure threshold). Large SATA drives can take hours - even days in some cases - to rebuild, putting your RAID 5 in danger of failure for however long the rebuild takes.

Cheers for the response, helps a lot! :) :)
Disk size is 250GB, so only small disks....
Given i need to rebuild the server at some point, the Raid 6 does sound a good choice!!
Best i reboot my server to clear the message also (E1812)
Thank you!!

I've got simmilar error on Poweredge720: pdr1116 drive is removed. Restarting did not help. Helped to simply shut down server. Pull out power cable or cables if multiple PSU to turn off led screen with error message. Turn on again and it's blue without errors.
