R630 nothing but problems installing Ubuntu
Why is this so hard? I have tried this installation over 6 times now. R630 with the latest firmware on all devices. Trying to use various brands of SSD hard drives. I can get Ubuntu installed on it using USB drive. Anytime I reboot, I cannot get back into it. It gives all kinds of errors about hard drive missing, etc....'
I think the problem is the SSD hard drives. The BIOS never detects the drive. The RAID will sometimes detect it, sometimes not (again, using 2 different brands).
Please help!

Hi,
If the RAID controller has issues detecting the drives, you might need to check if the drive is compatible. If you are using a non Dell certified drive, it might be difficult to narrow down the root cause of the OS not able to boot. I would suggest checking the RAID controller logs to identify if it is the cause of the issue.
Another thought I have is about the OS compatibility. Base on Ubuntu's page, R630 supports up to 18.04 LTS. https://dell.to/4g9036E.
Here's an extensive article on installing Linux/Ubuntu on Poweredge: https://dell.to/3E3luZs.
Just in case, if you need help from Ubuntu community, here's https://dell.to/4gcAqC7.

Well, if I leave it alone and let it reboot enough times, it will eventually boot into Ubuntu....Are there any settings in the Raid controller I need to adjust to make it more compatible with this SSD? I have the drive configured as non-raid right now.

There isn't any setting in the BIOS or raid controller that would increase the drives compatibility. If you have the ability, would you confirm tha part number for the drive in question?

Will venture to say that you will say the drive is not compatible. I have tried both of these: Ortial oc-150-128 and PNY Cs900 SSD. Same results with both.

I can confirm that they aren't supported. Also, they look to be geared towards client devices, such as laptops and desktops.
There does appear to be one close to those specs that is supported, part # C6365.

Can you post the list of all supported SSDs? Will this model work: Dell #1KTD0. I do not need a lot of space.

Or would any SSD that is labelled "server" or "Enterprise" or Dell labelled also being server or enterprise work?

Unfortunately we don't have a complete list that is customer facing, despite the parts for your dell page, which doesn't have any ssd listed.
If you give me the specs you are interested in I can give you some suggestions. As far as 1KTD0, it isn't listed for any Poweredge server and also looks to be for laptops and desktops.
If labeled as Dell Enterprise it does drastically increase its chance of compatibility, but it would also depend on what generation server it supports, such as new or old.

120gb or slightly larger would be fine.

Hello,
I would recommend contacting Sales and tell them what you need and they can provide options.
You will also need to purchase the carrier with it. We don’t sell those separately. Sales could quote a customer kit with drive and carrier.
These are a few 120G that I see.
These are Service Part numbers.
5GYVY - SSDR,120G,2N,IT06,2.5,IHV,EC
F98R4 - SSDR,120G,SATA6G,2.5,BT,LT-N9
KX83R - SSDR,120G,T06,2.5,I-HV,S3510
MVTNM - SSDR,120G,SATA6G,2.5,BT,INTEL

So, these 4 drives you listed are guaranteed to work correctly?

Hi,
4 of these drives are compatible. It will work with the server, but it depends on how you use it. You will also need to install a compatible OS.

So, picked up a KX83R drive from the suggestion above. Got it loaded, put ubuntu on it (the last supported version from Dell). Still having boot issues. Drive passes diagnostics. If I keep power cycling it, it will eventually boot up to the OS, but takes 3-5 tries, each time giving various errors. How should I have the drive configured in BIOS and in RAID? I have AHCI on, and have it set to a NON-Raid drive right now. This Dell supported drive does not show up in the BIOS drive list at all (in fact, no drive I have tried so far has). I have the drive in the far right top drive bay (10 bay unit)

Hi,
If you have other drives connected, try unplugging them to see if that fixes the issue. Also, check the iDRAC system logs for any errors. You've already set it to AHCI mode, which is great. Ensure your firmwares are up to date. Do you add any 3rd party part to server? If you do then please remove them and try again. And after part replacement if you didn't power drain, please perform power drain.
