R710 SSD Failure

I purchased 2 TB Sandisk SSD's for an R710

Whilst they ran ok, we had a constant yellow warning on the front panel display "Disk error - Please review and clear" (for both drives). However everything looked fine in OMSA

About a year later - both drives fail at the same time. I RMA'd them, put the new drives in, and same problem - warning messages on the front, nothing in OMSA, but the server itself is running as normal.

I don't believe we have been unlucky enough to purchase 4 SSD's at this stage, and as far as I can tell, SSD's are supported for the R710. I obviously don't want to damage 2 other SSD's.

What can we do to diagnose or remedy?

Hi,

I'm unsure if the SSDs are Dell brands? Do they have DPN# that I can check if it's compatible with R710? Yes, R710 does support SSD but if the drives are not Dell branded/certified drives, the server may have errors in such like what you're having (Disk errors, but in OMSA logs, it does not show any further info). These are cause by the RAID controllers communication with the drives, it may report errors is no Dell firmware are detected in the drives.

I'm unsure of the failed drives simultaneous, it could be the drives are faulty. You probably may need to deep dive into the PERC logs to check on the issue.

I may suggest to update the server's firmware. Start with iDRAC/LCC, then BIOS before moving to PERC firmware.

Let me know if you have questions.

Hi Joey,

Thanks - all drivers and firmware are up to date.

Currently using the perc 6/i

We're currently using these - SanDisk SSD PLUS 1 TB Sata III 2.5 Inch Internal SSD, Up to 535 MB/s

Just seems strange that both failed at exactly the same time

Hi Dave,

you could use OMSA or Dell 64 Bit uEFI Diagnostics to test your System,

mostly updating firmware could solve these Failures.

Hi Martin,

Please see my previous comment - all firmware is currently up to date.

OMSA drive reports a drive failure - I clear it, but then it returns.

I've just switched the PERC 6/i for another PERC 6/i.

We do have a spare H700 - would it be worth upgrading? If so, what cable do I need to purchase

Hi,

You can try replacing the PERC 6/i to check if the issue persist. I am assuming the the drives are non-Dell drives, which can cause such issue, as the controller could not communicate with the drives properly.

If you would upgrade the server with H700, you should need cables DPN# R145M to connect from the PERC to the Backplane. H700 has more cache space which is 512MB or 1GB whereas PERC6/i has 256MB.

Hi DaveB-Opt,

Could you share some first hand experience, thank you!

also perc 6/i, 256 SSD, the maxmium is at 100 MB/S, too slow

thanks in advance!
