R720 split backplane / dual RAID option

Hi, were a small business that needs to replace a five year old PowerEdge 2950 server with a newer machine. Buying a server is a big deal for us, and I do not want to spend on components now if I don't have to. My question relates specifically to storage, I have read around the R720 documentation, but cannot find the answer to my question: by ordering the R720 with the 2.5" Chassis and up to 8 + 8 Hard Drives and 2 Controllers, does this allow me to fill half the storage slots with disks now, (I intend to run VM's on them), and then in future when the storage on the original disks is used up, fill the remaining storage slots with more disks (with the intention of running different VM's on the new disks). Basically, can I stagger adding storage to the R720 in this configuration.

Cheers,

Daniel

Daniel.BL,

Let me confirm this. You are wanting to get a R720 with the  8 HDD chassis. You want to use (for example) 4 drives now in a couple Raid 1's or a Raid 5, and then in the future, when needed, you can use the remaining unused spots?

If that is what you were asking then Yes you can. There is no restriction with the server, backplane, or controller that would keep you from being able to configure another array with new disks added to the free slots after configuring the original array.

I hope this helps.

Hi Chris,

I am interested in the 2.5" 16 bay chassis, its listed in the product selector as 2.5" Chassis with up to 8 + 8 Hard Drives and 2 Controllers. My desire is to purchase 8 disks now, and using the first RAID controller create a RAID-10 array to host some VM's; and then at some point in future purchase another 8 disks and using the second RAID controller create a separate RAID-10 array for some more VM's.

Cheers,

Daniel
